2008 Terschellings Oerol Festival
2008 Terschellings Oerol Festival
The Terschellings Oerol Festival is an annual location-specific theater event held on the Dutch island of Terschelling. It runs this year from June 13-22. Oerol refers to an ancient tradition on the Dutch Island of Terschelling, when spring weather conditions allowed cattle to be released from their winter stables and barns to roam the meadows, grazing in freedom. Linking Art with Landscapes
The 2008 Terschellings Oeorol Festival features visual arts as well, including a video report on the world voyage by sailor Arjen Boerstra. It was viewed in the top of this tower, overlooking the sea.
A Choice of Scenery
Theater at the Oerol Festival happens in barns, sheds and even in the sea.
Under the Big Top
Every year around 50,000 people from around the world visit the 10-day festival.
Something for All the Senses
Oerol has a strong connection with visual arts and art in public spaces. Every year Oerol chooses a theme closely linked with the island. Inspiration is provided by the island itself, but themes can reflect world politics as well.
Natural Lighting
Dutch artist Jellie Schippers' work "De Onnoembaren" was performed at low-tide near the Terschelling Harbor.
Making Visual Art Interactive
Oerol is the stage for a great array of visual arts, including large landscape projects like "Walking" by Robert Wilson, Theun Mosk and Boukje Schweigman.
Constantly Changing Scenery
During Oerol thousands of visitors bike to over 60 temporary theaters located in attractive natural surroundings on the island.
Explore and Discover a Magical Island
The underlying philosophy of the Oerol Festival is that the whole island of Terschelling serves as a stage and source of inspiration for national and international theater producers, musicians and graphic artists. Beaches, woods and dunes function as both stage scene and setting.
