Labour migration and hidden issues: A role for the international media
The main aim of this workshop is to explore how the media within Asian countries and internationally, can be utilized in tackling migrant labor related issues. This deals especially with how mainstream international media organizations like DW can assist in developing some sort of citizen journalism scheme/network internationally, along with NGOs working in the media field such as AMIC and International Resource Centre on the Human Rights of Migrant Workers. This network could commmunicate the hidden issues of labor migration to the decision makers and the communities involved in both the sending and receiving countries.
Workshop details: The workshop will include a panel presentation followed by a discussion and the drafting of a plan of action. It is broken into two sessions of 90 minutes each.
Session 2: Drafting plan of action
This session, taking the presentations above into account, will be conducted in a round-table fashion to draft a plan of action. The goal will be to make migrant workers’ voices heard in the mainstream media via the application of a citizen journalism process involving NGOs working in the field, community radio and social networking, public service broadcasters in Asia and Europe, and international broadcasters like DW. AMIC may present a draft plan of action for consideration by the workshop for review, possible amendments and adoption. The session will be chaired by Kalinga Seneviratne of AMIC.
