Germans and Germans - One Country, One Nation?
For twenty years, Germans have been living together again in a single state. In the East, the roads are no longer full of pot holes, and city centers have been restored to their former glory. The Berlin Wall has disappeared to the extent that city authorities considered putting parts of it back up for the tourists. Yet Germans still have trouble seeing themselves as one people. Communist East Germany is still more present in many people’s minds than they would have thought twenty years ago. Back then, people in the East yearned for the apparently unlimited opportunities of western lifestyles. Today, many have an obscure nostalgia for the past.
