Germany chooses World Cup base

Germany has chosen its base for next year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The unfinished resort is in a village called Santo André, about 1,100km north-east of Rio de Janeiro. The decision to go with a new venue rather than one of the 83 suggested by FIFA has fueled debate about whether the German Football Association is too picky.

Uruguay qualifies for 2014

Uruguay has become the last team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. In a goalless draw played in Montevideo, Uruguay was frustrated by Jordanian defenders keen to avoid any repeat of last week's 5-0 thrashing in Amman.

Ronaldo sends Portugal to Brazil

Cristiano Ronaldo's hat trick bested Zlatan Ibrahimovic's brace as Portugal defeated Sweden to reach the World Cup. France, Croatia and Greece also secured places in Brazil in the final evening of European qualifiers.

Construction work on the World Cup stadium in Curitiba Brazil is far behind schedule. FIFA is giving the city a February 18 deadline to show sufficient progress or make way or another city.
