Under the Hindu Devdasi system, daughters of poor families were given to a local temples, as 'brides of god' to take care of the temple and performed rituals and music. Traditonally, they used to enjoy a high social status. Yet the practice was officially banned in 1988, because it was seen another form of prostitution. Yet the practice continues, and the women are fighting for their dignity.
