Taking Germany's Pulse

Mosques in Germany

Discontent over the building of a new mosque has come to a head in Cologne. There are more than 200 mosques across Germany, and permits are issued without asking local residents.

Germany is home to around 4 million Muslims. Ever since 9-11, mosques here have been under heightened scrutiny, particularly those in which hate preachers try to radicalise their congregations. In a bid to counter radicalism, Osnabrück University has now started Germany´s first-ever training course for Muslim clerics, aimed at providing imams with language skills and local knowledge.
