Freed from the ring - Wild animals banned from the circus

Elephants standing on their hind legs, bears on the balance beam - all that could soon be history. The Bundesrat, the chamber of Germany's federal states, has voted to ban wild animals from the circus.

It said that elephants, bears, giraffes, rhinos, hippos and primates cannot be kept under humane conditions by traveling circuses. Circus operators are up in arms.
