The scars of conflict in Abkhazia

Abkhazia, a self-proclaimed republic, was once heralded as the subtropical jewel of the Soviet Union. Today, it's in limbo. After the breakup of the Soviet Union the region went to war with Georgia in the early 1990's and declared independence. There was another conflict between the two sides in 2008. The scars of those conflicts remain as Jacob Resneck discovered when he visited Abkhazia.
