Less than a month after the start of the war in Iran, fuel prices have risen sharply in the Republic of Moldova.
Petrol has gone up by around 6 Moldovan Lei [€0.30 or $0.35] per liter, while diesel has gone up by nearly 10 Moldovan Lei — an increase of over 40%.
This is a steep increase in a country that relies heavily on agriculture. The rising costs are putting enormous pressure on farmers.
Agriculture is a cornerstone of Moldova's economy, accounting for approximately 12% of GDP and 45% of the country's exports. Some 75% of the country's territory is devoted to agriculture.
Farmers warn that without swift intervention from the state, this season could become one of the most challenging in recent years.
