Community work in Burundi helps society and the environment

Millions in Burundi take part in mandatory community labor every Saturday, known as Sangwe. Once focused on cleaning, the work now addresses environmental challenges in the era of climate change: digging contour trenches to prevent soil erosion, planting trees to restore hillsides, and building infrastructure in cities. Farmers report higher crop yields and more resilient land. While participation is mandatory, many view the work as a means of strengthening solidarity and protecting livelihoods in the face of climate change.
