Marekani, kwa mara ya kwanza,imehudhuria kumbukumbu ya kuadhimisha miaka 65 tangu mji wa Japan,Hiroshima kushambuliwa kwa bomu la nyuklia.

Washirika wa vita vikuu vya pili -Uingereza na Ufaransa pia zimepeleka mabalozi wake kuhudhuria kumbukumbu hiyo kwa mara ya kwanza.Tarehe 6 Agosti mwaka 1945 mji wa Hiroshima uliteketezwa baada ya kuangushiwa bomu la nyuklia na ndege ya kijeshi ya Marekani.

Inakadiriwa kuwa katika mji wa Hiroshima, hadi watu 140,000 walipoteza maisha yao katika kipindi cha siku chache na wengine 70,000 katika shambulio jingine lililofanywa tarehe 9 Agosti 1945 katika mji wa Nagasaki. Kwa mujibu wa Japan, hadi sasa kiasi ya watu 270,000 wamefariki kutokana na athari za miale ya nyuklia. Japan, ni nchi pekee kushambuliwa na mabomu ya nyuklia na tangu wakati huo, inapigania kukomesha silaha za nyuklia.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Japan 03 August 2010 to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities where the US military dropped atomic bombs 65 years ago. The US bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 06 August 1945, killing tens of thousands of people in seconds. By the end of the year, 140,000 had died from the effects of the bomb. Marekani haijaomba msamaha kwa mashambulio hayo mawili. Kwa mujibu wa uchunguzi wa maoni uliofanywa, Wamarekani wengi wanaamini kuwa hatua hiyo ilipaswa kuchukuliwa ili kuvimaliza vita haraka. Wengine wanahisi haikuwa lazima kufanya mashambulio hayo na labda yalikuwa mashambulio ya kujaribu mabomu hayo.
