Mexico’s asylum process is fairly straightforward and applicants even have the chance to work in the country whilst awaiting a decision. Still, only about 7% of the Honduran migrants trying to make their way to the USA have decided to stay in Mexico.
One contender to take over as successor to Angela Merkel has questioned whether Germany's constitutional right to asylum should stay in its current form. It's not the first time the law has been a political hot potato.
Hungary's Viktor Orban is well known for his hard-line opposition on immigration and his refusal to accept refugees. But he's just granted asylum to the former prime minister of Macedonia, Nikola Gruevski. He fled his home country just before he was due to start a two-year prison term for corruption. DW's Hungary correspondent Stefan Bos spoke with Keith Walker.
