Police give all clear after US Navy site lockdown

Around two hours after the Washington, DC, Navy Yard went into lockdown, police say they found no signs of a shooter. Roads into the base, the site of a 2013 attack, had been closed as security forces mobilized.

The DC Police Department said on Thursday that reports of a shooter inside the Washington Navy Yard ultimately proved unfounded.

"A call was placed from a building inside of the Washington Navy Yard for possible sounds of gun shots around 7:29 a.m. (1129 UTC) - a subsequent request was made to partner law enforcement agencies for assistance," the department announced. "At this time we have completed our search of the building and have found no evidence of a shooting or injured personnel. The scene has been turned back over to NavSea Command."

Roads leading to the military facility were blocked as police and firefighters responded to the reports.

The military site, the oldest shore establishment of the US Navy, also witnessed a shooting in 2013, which left 12 people dead.

Various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Homeland Security Department, had previously warned of an increased risk of attack ahead of the US national Independence Day on July 4.
