Invasive fungal infections are increasingly leading to life-threatening diseases worldwide. And in agriculture, fungi pose a massive threat to harvests.

Worldwide, fungal infections are already responsible for three times as many deaths as malaria. Experts are extremely concerned about infections caused by invasive fungi, as the numbers are rising rapidly.

The focus is on two types of fungi: Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida auris. Both have been classified as particularly dangerous by the WHO. Since the discovery of Candida auris, there have been repeated life-threatening outbreaks worldwide, especially in hospitals.

Up to 60 percent of infections are currently fatal. The fungus is spreading rapidly. So far, it has been detected in more than 50 countries. Molds such as Aspergillus fumigatus are also a cause for concern, as the fungi are now resistant to many drugs and disinfectants.

The documentary shows what tulips, molds and pneumonia have to do with each other, and what role intensive agriculture and climate change play in the spread of fungal infections.
