Hurricane Erin lingers off US East Coast

Category 2 storm Erin isn't expected to make landfall, but its hurricane-force winds have triggered flooding and evacuations in North Carolina. It is forecast to keep surf and rip currents dangerous through the weekend.

Hurricane Erin is battering North Carolina's coast with waves as high as buildings and winds up to 160 km/h.

While some see it as a spectacle, the storm poses serious risks: Rip tides, flooding, and power outages.

Scientists warn that warming seas — driven by climate change — are fueling stronger, more destructive storms like Erin, and public awareness and preparedness are more crucial than ever.
