In 1883, German businessman Adolf Lüderitz struck a deal with Chief Josef Fredericks II of Bethanie to buy the entire coastline from Angra Pequena to the Orange River. But the deal was based on a lie. This kicked off Germany's agressive colonial land acquisition.
