Ukraine fears that the new pipeline will allow Russia to limit or even cut off the gas flowing through their land. That could cost Ukraine billions in important transport fees.
The green movement has very little in common with US President Donald Trump. But both are moving against the beleaguered Nord Stream 2 pipeline that is now being built to send Russian gas to Europe.
The Polish leader said the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, meant to transport Russian gas to Germany, would upset the "energy balance." He also called it a threat to central and eastern European countries.
The Federation of German Industry has said it's not bowing to increasing US pressure to drop the Russian-led Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and buy US liquefied gas instead. The BDI adds it wouldn't make economic sense.
Chancellor Merkel pledged to press Vladimir Putin over the latest escalation in Ukraine while opening a key Berlin conference with Ukrainian officials. Ukraine's Poroshenko has asked NATO for naval assistance.
