The 77 Percent — Anything admirable about polygamy?

Many African countries recognize polygamy under customary law or religious traditions, but not under civil law. Some church leaders have criticized the legalization of polygamy, saying it's disrespectful to women as it goes against the idea that spouses should be treated equally. But are people simply trying to run away from reality when it comes to polygamy? Or do church leaders have a point?
