Diagnosed with polio as a baby and raised in a conservative Pashtun community, Tajmeenah Khan's table tennis career has been marked by overcoming stigma and embracing the support of her family.

When Tajmeenah Khan was 10 months old, she was diagnosed with polio — an incurable disease that can cause lifelong disability.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are among only a few countries that still report new polio cases.

Pakistan's government spends a lot of effort driving nationwide vaccination campaigns. But support for polio survivors like Khan is limited.

Growing up in a Pashtun community, Khan faced rigid cultural and gender norms that restrict women's activities outside the home.

Women participating in sports are frowned upon, but not in Khan's family.
