America's 43rd President invited DW's Washington bureau chief Ines Pohl to his family's summer house in Maine. He doesn't give many interviews any more. But he made an exception to talk about "his friend" Angela Merkel - and about a shoulder massage that made headlines at the time.

George W. Bush was American President when Angela Merkel came to power as German chancellor, back in 2005. US-German Relations were at a low at the time. In this exclusive interview, President Bush tells the story of how his "friendship" with Angela Merkel developed - and reflects on her legacy.

DW's Washington bureau chief Ines Pohl conducted the interview as part of the DW documentary "Angela Merkel - Navigating a World in Crisis" that will air in September shortly before the federal elections which will determine Merkel's succession.
