From fruit bats to humans — a virus on the move

In a high security laboratory at the University of Marburg, researchers are studying the deadly Nipah virus. The risk of death after infection is high. The virus has been found in fruit bats that are able to travel long distances. Despite the potential danger, experts are watchful but not yet excessively alarmed. Meanwhile off the coast of South Africa, great white sharks are disappearing. In the Mediterranean, the invasive red lionfish is spreading, helped by rising sea temperatures. In India, aggressive water hyacinth is being turned into a feedstock for sustainable paper. And finally, peatland projects with water buffalo show how nature conservation and agriculture can go hand in hand. A program about migrating species that looks at how well-prepared we really are.
