It's Germany's only Alpine national park. There’s a lot to discover, from the depths of Lake Königssee to the top of the Watzmann.
The Berchtesgaden National Park in Bavaria was founded on August 1, 1978 and attracts 1.5 million visitors a year. Its landmark is the 2713 meter high Watzmann mountain, at the foot of which the Königssee sparkles.
At an altitude of almost 2600 metres, a mountain gradually breaks apart. The meter-sized crack at the top of the Hochvogel is getting bigger and bigger. Experts fear that the summit will soon rush down into the valley.
Hardly anywhere else on Earth is as good for whale watching as the Canary Islands in the Atlantic. DW reporter Christina Deicke went on board to get a glimpse of these marine giants in their natural habitat.
