Augsburg was home to several prominent bankers and merchants, including Jakob Fugger. And the city's easy access to water made it an important industrial center in the late 19th century.
Whether hiking in the mudflats of the North Sea coast or horse riding in the Lüneburger Heide heath- Niedersachsen is considered a top holiday destination in Germany because of its diversity of landscapes.
Altogether 170 costumed participants are traveling a historical route often used by German merchants in past centuries. Dozens of horses are also involved in the two-week reenactment.
Bavaria captivates tourists with its rustic traditions, royal palaces, and, of course, the Alps.
Huge ski resorts, hotel complexes and noisy après-ski parties are the norm in many Alpine areas. Not in Berchtesgadener Land. The rural region missed out on many touristic developments. Now it's reaping the benefits.
