We mentioned it earlier in the show - Standard and Poor's lowered its rating on United States sovereign debt from AAA to an AA+ rating on Friday, largely because of the failure of divided US leaders to reach a consensus on reining in the country's spiralling debt. The news stunned Americans and points to the political polarization in Washington. The credit downgrade has seriously hit the world's largest economy and spooked global markets. Investors are fastening their seatbelts and bracing for a bumpy ride.
