The southern Indian state of Kerala has for the first time allowed Dalit priests to take charge of government-owned temples. This is seen as a progressive step towards eliminating caste discrimination in Hindu religious places, where Brahmins, who are on top of the caste hierarchy, have traditionally held sway.
