Valetta is the capital of the Mediterranean island country of Malta. And this year it's also one of Europe's two Capitals of Culture. The Maltese city kicked off the festivities with acrobatics and fireworks.
The operators of Aquarius 2 have announced they are bringing 58 migrants to the French port of Marseille. The rescue ship has been repeatedly turned away by Italy and forced to stop in Malta and Spain in recent months.
The coast guard has rescued migrants from 68 different smuggling boats in the last two days. This is in addition to the 630 people due to arrive in Spain on Sunday after being turned away by Italy and Malta.
After floating around the Mediterranean for days, the rescue ship Lifeline has arrived in a Maltese port. Malta's prime minister has threatened legal action against the German charity that operates the vessel.
The Berlin government has agreed to process asylum applications from 50 of the 450 migrants aboard two EU vessels. Italy is testing a renewed promise by EU leaders to share the migrant burden across Europe.
