US Republicans block funding for Ukraine

Ukraine's President Zelenskyy has met with political leaders in Washington in a bid to get more support for his country's fight against Russia. Republicans in Congress refuse to release additional funds.

"Putin is banking on the United States failing to deliver for Ukraine. We must, we must, we must prove him wrong."

A strong warning from US President Joe Biden, directed straight at the United States Congress, where Republicans are blocking a 61 billion dollar defense package for Ukraine.

Standing beside him, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had received "positive signals" from lawmakers about the possibility of more aid...

...but no results yet.

And as US funding for Ukraine is fast running out, Republicans are digging their heels in.

Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, came out of an earlier meeting with Zelenskyy unmoved.

"So what the Biden administration seems to be asking for is billions of additional dollars with no appropriate oversight, no clear strategy to win, and none of the answers that I think the American people are owed."

Domestic politics is also getting in the way: Republicans say they won't approve further financial support to Ukraine unless Biden agrees to tougher reforms to reduce immigration across the southern US border.

The US president underlined his backing of Ukraine several times during Zelenskyy's short trip to DC. But without the support of Congress, he could only send him home with a fraction of the funding he's hoping for.
