Hungary election: Man 'corrects' government campaign posters

March 25, 2026

As the April 12 general election approaches, political posters are everywhere in Hungary — a busy time for activist Peter Heindl, who has for years been "correcting" government posters in an act of political resistance.

With only weeks to go until Hungary's general election on April 12, political posters are everywhere in Hungary.

While this is not unusual in the run-up to a major election, lawyer and history teacher Peter Heindl says that government posters, which are paid for with public money, essentially repeat the campaign messages of the ruling Fidesz party.

He believes that the state must remain neutral and says that state propaganda is illegal. Heindl has for years been actively "correcting" government posters, covering them with satirical and critical messages.

While some see him as a vandal, others view him as a defender of democracy and the freedom of expression. Heindl believes he is both morally and legally in the right and is determined to continue his activism.
