Global executions surge with China topping the list

At least 883 people were executed worldwide in 2022, says Amnesty International — that's the highest number recorded in five years. Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt alone carried out 90% of those executions. However, the figures exclude China, which is thought to execute thousands each year.
