Ed Sheeran to make guest appearance on 'Game of Thrones'

The popular fantasy series "Games of Thrones" will get an unlikely star for season seven: top-selling British pop star Ed Sheeran. He follows in the footsteps of musicians like Coldplay.

Ed Sheeran's upcoming guest role on "Game of Thrones" was announced Sunday at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. Sheeran, who just released his latest album, "Divide," is set to perform at the annual music and technology event.

"Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner made the announcement during a SXSW panel, with Benioff saying, "For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie," who is reportedly a big fan of the musician.

Sheeran tweeted a confirmation of the announcement.

The red-headed British singer-songwriter won't be the first pop star to appear on the HBO fantasy series. According to Vanity Fair, Coldplay and the Icelandic bands Of Monsters and Men and Sigur Rós have both been on the show.

While HBO confirmed Sheeran's role, "no more details" were being given at this time, reported Variety.

Season seven of "Game of Thrones" is set to being on July 16. Sheeran is taking "Divide" on a largely sold-out tour of Europe and North American from March through October.
