Demining Teams Risk all to Free Laos of Vietnam War bombs

May 23, 2025

Laos is still the most heavily bombed country worldwide per capita, due to the Vietnam War.

There are more than 80 million unexploded mini-bombs in the ground in Laos, a 40-year-old legacy of the Vietnam War that still kills and maims dozens of people every year. The explosive devices are dropped in containers and released in the air. The stubby wings on the bomb casing set the falling cluster bombs in motion and thus sharpen the detonator, which triggers the explosion when the rotation is stopped.

Demining teams risk their lives daily to defuse unexploded ordnance.
