Veste Coburg, or Coburg Fortress, in Franconia is one of the largest and best-preserved fortified castles in Germany. It was the main seat of the dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and now houses important art treasures.
The 18th century dukes created artistic landscaped gardens here; the Bauhaus masters ushered in the era of modern architecture. For visitors, that means UNESCO World Heritage sites wherever you look.
