Catch a Wave - Surfing in China

Visitors who arrive on Hainan island may think that they're in Hawaii, instead of the People's Republic of China. Hainan is the country's new surfing capital, and has become popular with enthusiasts from around the world.
Darci Liu is China's first female professional surfer. She was born and raised in the landlocked province of Hubei, and moved to Hainan in 2007: "If I hadn't discovered surfing, I'd probably be a wife and mother in some Chinese city right now, and I'd be terribly bored." Liu retired from competitive surfing in 2014 to focus her attention on cleaning up China's polluted coastal areas.
China's government has discovered the economic potential of surfing, and has set up a national training center near Hainan's Houhai Bay.
Surfing will make its debut as an Olympic event at this year's Tokyo Games, and China hopes to produce a new generation of medal winners in this sport.
