Germany's camping sites continue to profit from the great demand to holiday close to nature. Comfortable caravans and campers bring in more affluent customers. 2017 looks set to be a record breaking year.
Following several consecutive record breaking years things are looking promising for this year too, according to the President of the Federal Association of the Camping Economy in Germany, Gunter Riechey. Camping sites are also receiving an economic boost from the strong growth in the caravan and camper market.
Last year the camping sector registered 30.4 million overnight stays and some 9 million guest arrivals, an increase of about four percent on the preceding year. Most popular destination of campers remains Bavaria with 5.2 million overnight stays at camping sites, followed closely by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with nearly 5 million overnight stays and Lower Saxony with 4.4 million.
An area that is still lagging behind is the alternative accommodations like mobile homes or log-cabins. Riechey said camping sites in the Netherlands and in southern Europe are still ahead in this sector.
