Berlin has a growing homeless population. More than half of the people are from Eastern Europe and depend on the many shelters around the city. Local authorities are struggling to cope.
The hairdressers from southwest Germany have received the Grand Prix Humanitaire de France for offering free haircuts to the homeless. A documentary on the plight of those living rough prompted the idea.
A German man who has been missing for months has reportedly surfaced at Fiumicino airport west of Rome. Police say he was "scruffy-looking" and living among the homeless.

The German association for homeless people has claimed that sleeping out in cold temperatures caused the victims to die. Last year, the winter chill claimed three lives during the same period.
