China’s President, Xi Jinping, is determined to turn his country into the world’s leading superpower. Can Donald Trump – with a flagging reputation at home and abroad – stand up to him? Our guests this week: Andreas Kluth (Handelsblatt Global), Shi Ming (freelance journalist), Gudrun Wacker (SWP).
Gudrun Wacker is an expert on China and security affairs. She says: “Xi Jinping projects an image of China as a great power that can offer the world a new approach to tackle problems and is ready to take more international responsibility.”
Andreas Kluth is editor in chief for Handelsblatt Global. He says: “China’s time horizon is much longer than Donald Trump’s. On that Chinese scale, China is certainly a rising power, while America is stagnating or already declining. That is not a good thing.”
Shi Ming is a freelance journalist from China. He says: “Whether China will become the next superpower depends how other parts of the world position themselves - for example, Europe.”
