Santa Cruz del Islote, off Colombia's Caribbean coast, is extremely crowded. The island is smaller than two football fields, yet around 1,000 people live here. No other island in the world is as densely populated.
There are no cars — there simply isn't space. Residents organize daily life among themselves, without police or politicians. The first settlers arrived about 160 years ago to escape severe mosquito infestations on nearby islands. There are no mosquitoes on Santa Cruz del Islote — but today, growing tourism is changing life on the island.
