Prostitution is a way of life for thousands of families in the Mandsaur region of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Tradition has it that it is a hereditary occupation, passed on from one generation of women to the next of the Banchhada tribal community, who are said to be the descendants of royal courtesans.
