No trip to Venice, the City of Canals, is complete without a visit to the islands of Burano and Murano. All kinds of fish delicacies delight the palate, and the lace-maker’s and glass-blower’s art gladden the eye.
The World Heritage-listed city is using a busy long weekend as an experiment before the summer season kicks off. Mass tourism has taken its toll on the lagoon city, but it relies on the income.
"Tourists destroy what they are looking for by finding it," wrote German writer Hans-Magnus Enzensberger — and that applies to Venice today. Still, DW reporter Juan Martinez has found ways to avoid the crowds.
As record amounts of late-winter snow cover areas of northern Europe, a new storm from the south has brought freezing rain and thunderstorms to the continent. Subzero temperatures have killed dozens since last Friday.
