US President Donald Trump has told Israeli and Arab leaders he intends to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, sparking fears of serious repercussions across the Middle East.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have held talks in Berlin. Abbas called for Europe to play a greater role in the Middle East peace process because he says the US is not neutral.
Modi and Abbas' first-ever meeting in the West Bank comes as the Palestinian leader seeks to replace the US as the sole mediator between Israelis and Palestinians.
The new government slashes hopes of reconciliation between the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority and Gaza's Hamas rulers. Hamas said the new Cabinet had "no national legitimacy."
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said Trump should be ashamed of his Middle East peace efforts. Abbas also called into the question the Oslo Accords, which stipulate Palestinians' recognition of Israel.
