The Smart ED is due to go into full production by 2012. The plans are ambitious. The emissions-free mobility concept has come to fruition with the Smart ED. The second generation Smart electric drive city car has been in production for a year. The first production run was limited to 1500 test vehicles. The car relies on lithium ion technology for power. The advantage is higher performance from shorter recharging times and a longer working life. But the fact that these cars are not environmentally neutral should not be ignored. The negative impact stems from the origin of the battery materials, as well as the manufacture and disposal of the cars. We took a Smart ED for a spin around the streets of New York.
