Originally a team made up of miners, Schalke is now the world’s fourth largest football club, with 135,000 members. One of them is Helmut Lauschus, who is among the very few miners left in the region.
The midfielder has been linked in the media with the likes of Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool. Schalke had been desperate for him to sign a new deal but say the decision has been amicable.
