Joe Borg has been familiar with international politics now for a number of years. In 1999, he became foreign minister of Malta, an office he was able to hold onto until after the victory of the Nationalist Party in 2003's parliamentary elections. As foreign minister he was part of the group responsible for accession negotiations between Malta and the European Union. He has also served as a member of Malta's parliament since 1995.

European politics

Before he took office as minister, Borg served as an advisor for European affairs in Malta's foreign ministry from 1989 until 1995. There he established the European policy department. From 1992 to 1995, he served on the board of directors of the Maltese Central Bank.

Studies

Born on March 19, 1952, Borg studied law at the University of Malta and obtained his doctorate in 1975. After finishing his studies, Borg worked for several years as an attorney and subsequently began teaching at his alma mater and at the Manchester University School of Business and the University College of Wales.
