Roma constitute a significant minority in Macedonia. But their outlook remains bleak.
As the EU announced it will allow accession talks with Western Balkan nations, Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev told DW that his country will "proudly walk through the gates of Europe."
France and the Netherlands have sacrificed the EU's credibility in the Balkans, punishing Macedonia and Albania in order to appease populists. It's a dangerous and shortsighted move, says DW's Boris Georgievski.
Albania and Macedonia have been given the go-ahead to prepare for EU accession talks – though not until June 2019. In an interview with DW, German Deputy Minister Michael Roth says it’s the right decision.
