Italy's coastal real estate needs better storm protection

Storms are wreaking ever more damage along Italy's coasts, which often lack adequate protection and have houses built too close to the sea. Given climate change, does it make sense to rebuild damaged seaside buildings?

Violent storms and rising seas are putting Mediterranean coastal towns at growing risk. In January 2026, Cyclone Harry struck southern Italy, sending waves up to 10 meters high onto the coast of Sicily.

Areas around Nizza di Sicilia and Taormina suffered severe damage, with residents narrowly escaping danger.

Decades of construction close to the shoreline have increased vulnerability. Experts warn that a warming Mediterranean is fueling extreme weather, while insufficient coastal protection and rebuilding without long-term planning leave communities exposed to future storms.
