The year begins just as the old one ended, with people out on the streets of Hong Kong. Many are students and have a lot to risk by protesting.
What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated to brief cat-and-mouse clashes with police. The authorized gathering was forced to disperse after protesters threw water bottles and paint at police.
The region's chief executive says the 'one country, two systems' arrangement could continue if the city shows loyalty to Beijing. Pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong have been ongoing for over six months.
Unknown vandals scrawled "Free Hong Kong" in red paint on the base of the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen. The statue is one of Denmark's most famous landmarks — and a favorite with Chinese tourists.
Hong Kong's special status makes it the freest place in the world to do business. As the economy slows and tensions over democracy protests linger, Hong Kong and Beijing both need "one country, two systems" to work.
