All is not as it seems on German pizzas. According to an article in the newsmagazine Der Spiegel, the ham on German pizzas is often nothing but poor quality meat imitations. According to the report, researchers from the Bavarian Institute of Health and Food Safety tested 108 pizza samples from different sources and rejected two-thirds of them as substandard. The ham imitations found by investigators often consisted primarily of gelatine to which had been added pieces of muscle, soy and whey protein combined with water. The report said that the quality of pizza ingredients has been in decline since 1993. Investigators found no appreciable difference between frozen pizzas from the supermarket and those made in restaurants.
