Matthew Karnitschnig is the chief correspondent in Europe for Politico.

"Europe's populists are here to stay," he says." If traditional mainstream parties fail to reinvent themselves soon, it's only a matter of time before the fringe supplants them."

Alan Posener, a British-German journalist, is a commentator for the daily newspaper Die Welt.

He says that "political parties alone can't stop the rise of the far right. Civil society, from trade unions to football clubs, need to rally around liberal democracy."

Géraldine Schwarz is a French-German journalist who's just published a book about the role of her family under the Nazis.

She says "the emergence of Europe's far-right populists is linked to the way in which individual European countries have since the Second World War tried, or not tried, to come to terms with their history."
