Thousands are trying to escape violence and poverty in central America by taking the 3000 km trek north, hoping to reach the USA. In Guatemala, DW reporter Andreas Bouke met migrants on the first leg of the journey.

Trek of Hope: Migrant Caravans in Guatemala  

Last fall, caravans of thousands of migrants from Central American countries plagued by extreme poverty and violence began making their way north. It takes weeks for them to reach the US border, but only a few ever make it across. In Guatemala, Andreas Boueke talked to migrants in one of the latest caravans, still in the early stages of their journey.
