World in Progress: India's cash crisis hits informal economy

Last November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a move to demonetize the economy: large cash notes were being devaluated. The idea was to fight corruption and stop politicians buying votes with cash. But the results have been detrimental to the economy, slowing growth and hitting people in the informal sector hard. Many workers have lost their jobs .
